So, guys, we're excited. I know I always say that, but you know, being excited is just a part of life. It's a part of what we should be feeling on a regular basis. Um, but let me tell you why I'm so excited today. We just received our new versions of our plushies. Yes, and they are number one adorable, friendly, and um a lot smaller than the the other ones, but they're not small as in too small. They're they're the perfect size for keychains, they're the perfect size for handheld, so we're just really excited about that.

Black History Month Spotlight: Alexander Miles

Yeah, uh talent out the wazoo. So just yeah, enjoy and and tell them we sent you, and then you'll get to see how nice they really are. So, Jen, we're we're gonna jump right into uh a piece of a topic that is passionate, I'm passionate about, and and I have a lot of passion for this subject. So um I really want to share this, and I hope I have the space to do so if you don't mind. I don't mind at all. Okay, so this is officially Black History Month, and I think it's very important that we share things about Black History Month. Number one, because I'm black, number two, because uh there's a lot of history that people just are not aware of. And so I like to bring information forward so that you can learn something that you haven't learned in the traditional school setting. So there's this man, his name is Alexander Miles. He was born in 1838 and he lived until 1918. I hope that you can pick up on a couple of things, but if you don't, then I'm just gonna point them out to you. But uh, Mr. Miles, Mr. Alexander Miles, also a black American, um, he created something very special, not only to the world, but even more so to us, because it has to do with this podcast, which is elevating people. And he created a part of the elevator that we traditionally ride in to go from floor to floor to floor.

When you say a part of the elevator, what do you mean?

I'm getting to that part.

Okay.

Uh, and and I say it like that because um he revolutionized the elevator. There was something happening that was pretty traumatic. People were dying quite often because they were falling into open elevator shafts, the elevator was coming down and collapsing on them, and he created a mechanism uh for the safety of making sure that the elevator closed properly, and he did this in 1887. So he was born 1838, and in 1887, he created this invention almost 50 years old, right? So this this and and that's another thing I'm really hoping everyone's honing in on. There's a lot of good nuggets here. Uh, you're never too old to create, you're never too old to invent, and you can't believe everything that you're told because of where it's coming from. So this man uh created this in 1887. If you're following a timeline of slavery and black people, you would really be shocked to know that slavery ended in 1885 and then two years later he created this amazing invention and had a patent. So that information needs to be looked into because if what this is saying is true, then what the schools are saying might not be as true. So that that that's a nugget I really like for people to kind of look for and find out on their own.

Naming The Show And Its Deeper Meaning

I love that, and I I want to share a backstory on how this came up for me. So if you ever were to be a fly on the wall here at the body house, I think you would find this very comical. Because literally one morning recently, I woke up first. I think I woke up first, and I made sure Corey was starting to get up. And I said, Corey, did you know that the elevator was invented by a black person? And playing that back, that's just silly. Of course, you knew that. But here I was thinking I was educating my husband.

Yeah, I appreciate that. And and you know, I I ask that you never assume that someone knows something, even if they know it. And if if you're dealing with a pretty good person, they're not gonna make you feel bad about it or embarrass you about it. They're they're just gonna be like, oh yeah, I I I knew that. And then they may even add a few more details in it.

Yeah, so yeah, don't ever feel like you can't tell me something because I I might know it. I I I definitely don't know everything.

Well, I loved it even more because when we named this podcast years ago, Take the Elevator, like you said just a few minutes ago, was with the thought and the intention to elevate people in daily conversation and in everyday topics, right?

Um, and then I had no idea that the elevator was gonna have more connection and mean more to us because of Alexander Miles. Miles. Yes. So that was that was pretty neat. I was very um happy when that when I found that out.

No, I and I know you were um appreciative of that, and I hope that you continue to bring more exciting information my way. Uh Jen, I have to make an announcement that I'm gonna be in a parade. And I say I'm gonna be in a parade, we're gonna be in a parade, but it's it's centered around black history, and that's why I use that that term. But you you were invited to be right alongside of me in this parade, and we're going to be able to represent the fuzzy furry forest.

Parade Plans And Fontana Pride

Yes, and what I love about this parade, so that is exciting. It's our first one, and we're gonna be in our car, which is pretty cool. Another thing that I love is that it's based in Fontana. So for those who don't know, Fontana Court is your hometown. Like born and raised in Fontana, and the fact that you've been plugging into the hist uh historian here, and we're gonna be in this, that's such a treat. Like, I would have never guessed this to be one of the things that we're doing this year as we were like reviewing, like, oh, what's to come in 2026? Uh, I don't think we listed parade.

No, that was definitely not on the list. However, I will take it all day and twice on Sunday.

Yeah, I can't I can't wait. That's uh the 28th, which is a Saturday. Do you have any information that we can share?

The parade route, I believe, is from Sierra Lakes Parkway to Summit Avenue. And I think it's roughly around 10, 11 o'clock in the morning. Uh, please look at uh Fontana Information for the Black History Parade. And hopefully I can see you there and I'll give you a wave. Why is this so important to me? Um, I want to share this because uh a lot of people don't know how much I love Fontana, how much I've always loved Fontana. Being born in Fontana, uh, I moved away for a while, but my roots have never been removed from this amazing city. And I love this city because um it has things, it has had things in the 80s. It was the fast food capital of the world. Uh, it's always been the most windiest city in the inland empire. I love the wind. I've grown very attached to the wind. The wind brings me comfort, it makes me feel safe. Um, not a lot of people like to be in the wind, and I love to be in the wind. Uh, it's just one of those places that has its own little environment that I've grown close to and grown to love very, very, very, very, very much. Like all those berries.

Very much. It's so neat to drive around with you at Fontiana because you literally could say, Oh, that wasn't there, or this is what it used to be. And Jen, when I lived here, all of this was this, and where you lived before is actually right down the street from our house, about maybe two miles away. So we get when we go that way, we're able to see the house that Corey grew up in.

I literally grew up there.

Yeah. And uh yeah, it's just interesting. And you're like, and there was only this one store, and you had to walk all the way down.

And so I myself, the my connection to Fontana is the fact that Corey's connected to Fontana, but actually, um, my grandparents, my Aunt Lillian, my Aunt Helen, Aunt Amy, they all lived here when we were. I was still in LA County. And I remember when we drive here to visit, I just thought, man, people live out here. You know, I just didn't think it was like the greatest place to live. I don't know. That was just maybe more LA thinking.

Yeah, a lot of LA people had that idea when when uh well I I won't say when, I'll say back in those days, yeah. 80s, 90s, right, early 90s. Uh as the later 90s came around, you found a lot of city folk moving this way and becoming more a part of the inland empire than uh before the 80s. And there's a lot of people that have come out of the inland empire. I I've gone to school and grew up with some pretty well-known people, the Ovula Brothers. I went to church with them. Uh Jazzy Faye, who produced Sierra. I went to church with him and uh briefly went to school with him. Uh JJ Fad, I went to school with uh both of them. Ronnie Lott of the 49ers, San Francisco 49ers, went to the same junior high school I did.

He was older than I was, but there's a whole also the drummer from actually him and Courtney Kardashian were out here just a few months ago.

Yeah, what band? I I want to say Travis Barker. Yes, yes, yes, um then the tattoo artist. Um, she was on a reality show, and my her name skips my my brain right now.

I don't I don't remember, but yeah, she's like well cat. Yes, yes, so yeah, quite a few people come from out here, yeah.

From the Anglia Empire, and they don't talk about it as well, they used to didn't talk about it as much, but now it's really starting to get a lot of uh attention and people are beginning to uh um not respect it. I I am because I think wherever you're from, it gotta be respected.

Inland Empire Memories And Notable Names

They don't make fun of it like they did before, right? Fontechi. I moved out here in 2000 actually. So I can no longer say I'm not. I mean, I've been here for 26 years. That's a long time.

You're pretty much a Fontanian half my life, let's be real. Yeah, you're pretty much a Fontanian by by this point. Uh, and that's kind of what I was gonna say. Uh, a lot of people didn't want to represent being from the IE. Uh it's it it didn't have a good connotation back in the day, but the more people that you know come from here, the more you realize it's just like any other city.

Any other town, any other county.

Yeah, and it's growing. My gosh, is it growing? We we drive by all the time. There's just new homes, new apartments being built everywhere, and the traffic has become quite horrendous, I want to say. Like uh, yeah, even weekends, there's traffic.

Yeah, you used to could um figure out what time of day to go somewhere and kind of get there quickly and then return home before the traffic picked up. That that is no longer an option.

Well, it reminds me, so on Valentine's Day, I had dinner with a girlfriend and her daughter. We had a great time, and right next to us in the restaurant, there was a group of people, and they were from LA, and they actually love to come out this way.

So they came out this way for dinner, and they make this a regular part of their getaway from LA series.

So I gotta share another little quick story uh with the people, and I hope you guys enjoy this one. So you may not know this, but I've been on a personal journey, and Jen joined with me, or I joined with her. I don't remember who jumped it off, but we both got on board and we were very excited about uh this weight loss journey. And I typically don't like to talk about weight loss journeys because usually when you talk about it, um nobody knows that you're really losing weight or or on a journey. And so you're talking about it and they're like, but you haven't lost any weight. And I know that's that sounds funny, but it's it's a bit of a conundrum because you really are working hard to lose weight, and people just don't notice. However, this is a little bit different because when we took off on this journey, Jen took out a took off at a speed and a rate so unbelievable, and she just really so let me say like this everyone has a different body chemistry, a different body makeup. And when you tap into that chemistry where you're most effectively burning calories and losing weight, stick to it. And Jen honed in on that, on that, and and I really got a little jelly, I gotta be honest with you. So I I had to up my game, and we have been having a great time doing it. And one of the places we love to eat, and I'm I'm gonna hand it over to Jen, is Mendocino Farms, and that's where we get our salads and our uh our nutrition from right now. And so, Jen, please jump in there, save me.

A Realistic Weight And Health Reset

Well, so yes, I think weight loss is a big part of it. Um, for me, it really was a shift in my mindset. So we've done this before, guys, for people who know us. Years ago, we went on a weight loss journey, and I'm gonna say the reason why I fell off is because it really was about weight loss and reaching a certain size. And then once I got there, um, I stopped and just went back to bad old habits, right? This time my mindset is I want to be healthy, and that typically does include weight loss, right? We know that um being a certain size, certain uh weight for your height is always what's best. But I'm on medication that I seriously want to come off of. I mean, when I look back to what was being given to me, and I wish I just had more sense. Um, instead of talking to me about diet and lifestyle changes, the first response was put her on medication. So if you're listening and you are not on medication and you're headed that way, change your life so you can avoid being on medication. That's number one. Number two, if you are on medication, we can come off of this. Um, there have been many stories where that's happened, right? So um I know that there are things that I can't come off of, such as my thyroid medication, but everything else is about things that I can control.

Yeah, I love I love what you said. What you just said is is mind-altering. You said change your own life. And a lot of things we don't have the power to do, but that we can do. We can change our lives as far as what we put in our mouths.

Totally. So, um, yeah, so for me, it was get off these medications, get healthy. I want a quality life. I don't want to age and be in bed or barely able to move or have Corey assist me everywhere. Like, to me, that's not the way I want to live my life. Right. Right. So there's that piece. And then I realized movement is power. Like, I can't even emphasize this enough. If you were to ask me, Jen, what is it right now? Is it um more protein? Is it more fiber, less calories? I and I am intermittent fasting, but I'm gonna tell you movement is everything. In fact, now my body desires it. Like when I sit for too long, it doesn't feel right. The moment I move, I'm feeling better. Um, and it just knowing that big picture, I move now means I can move later.

Yeah.

And that's so important to me.

Yeah, I appreciate that information, Jen. And it is very educational to hear it like that, opposed to just someone, you know, whooping you with a right, with a message of lose weight, lose weight, lose weight.

And the movement is doesn't, it doesn't even have to be intense. I I'm telling you, like I'm home, so it doesn't I work from home three days a week. To me, it doesn't matter what the weather is, you can move anywhere. If it's outside, you get vitamin D from the sun, please do that. If you can't, I literally walk downstairs on the first floor of this house and I do laps. And guess what? I've got it down to where if I'm walking 10 laps downstairs, that's a thousand steps. Freaking amazing. 10 laps downstairs, a thousand steps takes me about eight to 10 minutes. And I do that throughout my workday. I've hit my 10,000 step goal. Right now, I will say this though, it does my watch does calculate that as moving calories, which is great. But I also know that 30 minutes of exercise, meaning 30 minutes of my heart being pumped up and almost to where I I love what my doctor said, Jen, 30 minutes of exercise looks like you won't be able to complete sentences and have a conversation if the exercise is right.

So, and but again, build up to it. I I can't wait. I have dreams of running. Um, first, of course, it's gonna be can I run a full half mile? I mean, just the thought of being able to run eventually. I love yeah.

I wanna I wanna double back, Jen, uh, to the medication. And I know I have to tread very softly and and speak um very carefully about anything with someone's medication or um anything a doctor has told you to do. This is what I want to say though most people on medication are forever patients. That's not a requirement for a lot of the meds that are being given to us. And so if you have the ability to come off of those meds, you can end your prescription of being a For every patient, and then what I would like for everyone under the sound of my voice to do is to look at what is the lifespan of being on this one particular medication. When you have the reality of that year in that time frame, it truly moves you in a different direction. Yeah, that is why I'm so adamant about if I can stay off of a med, I'm staying far, far away from it. And I don't want to get close to that because I know once you begin that that process, it literally shortens the amount of time that you have here on this earth with your loved ones.

Movement, Habits, And Everyday Wins

Yeah. And I love what you're saying, Corey, is we're not trying to say drop your meds. No. What I know I'd like to say on my behalf is I work very closely with my doctor, and he knows what my health goals are. And so he's carefully monitoring me. Like we're doing lab work every three months to see the progress. And I think that's one thing I've realized about healthcare now is doctors are being told they need to have more relationship with their patients. So I'm going to put a plug-in. Um, I'm part of Blue Zones IPA, and I love Blue Zones in concept. If you don't know what that is, there's a Netflix show on it. Um, Loma Linda is actually one has been titled and deserving of a title called a Blue Zone because of the way they eat and their lifestyle, right? It's it originated from Japan and just the length of life in years is amazing. The way they live, it's calmer, it's more stress-free, it's being very intentional about your diet. Um, I know in La Melinda, they are really vegetarian lifestyle.

Um, so just look into it and just figure out what works for you, you know. But the thing is, is we can we can make changes. Yeah. We don't have to be stuck. And when you feel stuck, I know what that's like. I hope you find someone that you can reach out to and just have this conversation with and make one small change today, just one small change. Um, maybe sometimes it's taking a longer route to a bathroom that you know in your office or um going to a bathroom that's further away, or maybe just parking somewhere that's not always right at the front door. I remember that was our thing. Yeah, we wanted to be right next to the front door. We would drive around literally for minutes looking for VIP parking. That's what we'd call it. Oh, look, we've got VIP parking. But no, it's like first spot, and you just get used to taking these steps and they add up. That's the beautiful thing. You don't have to do it all at one time just throughout the day.

And taking the stairs instead of the escalator or the elevator, if you can. And I can and I get it, you know, there are some people that cannot do that. So please don't push yourself to do something that you can't do. But if you can take those stairs and as Jen said, a longer route, please, please, please do that. My last thing is ask questions. You got to ask questions because a lot of times they just don't volunteer information to you. So if you ask a doctor, hey doc, if I'm on this particular medication, how does it affect my body long term? Is this going to be an issue? And then they may even look like, oh, wait, you know, that's a good question. Let me look into that. Uh, we might have to alter this and and bring this dosage down or bring this to another uh particular medication. Um, I I guarantee you, if you ask questions, you're potentially uh lengthening your life.

Yes, yes. It's so important to be curious about your care and what we're putting in our bodies, and that's with everything.

Everything. Okay, that's a whole nother episode.

But everything you put in your body, you need to research and find out more. Um so let's just talk real quick about some of the changes that have just been really simple, right? Um I and I just journaled on this before this episode, actually. And I said two and a half, three months ago, I was having coffee from my favorite coffee place every morning, sometimes twice a day. And my coffee was about 550 calories, 32 grams. At the start of the day. And so now that's not a thing. And I just remember how and I just remember what that felt like when I started coming off the coffee. Like we'd drive, pass by it, and I'd be like, Oh, I want some coffee. Like it was just a natural thing to be in the car and have coffee. Um, and so that that's been a win. And that today, that's what I'm gonna celebrate here on Take the Elevator, is that that's just one of the many, but it was something that I just thought I couldn't shake.

Medications, Questions, And Blue Zones

Yeah, and I'll tell you one of my victories, uh, that I look back now and say, how and how on earth did I get to this point? But um, I was actively looking for a low carb, low sugar, high protein snack. And so I was making protein cookies my your vice. Yeah, my vice and my go-to thing, and then it turned into an all-day thing, and that's something that I was having to have and feeling like if I don't get this, I'm in a certain mood. So once I broke that and cracked that uh vice out of my hands, I seen tremendous results. Yeah, and so uh I encourage you if if you find yourself having to have something, it's probably an addiction, it's probably something we need to break away from and do something different, and then get used to changing it up so you don't create these vices.

Yeah. And I know a lot of people right now, at least in our friends group, um, are doing Lent. And so what I I'm tracing this back to this for me and and this lifestyle change, I'm not gonna pretend like I just didn't have the strength within myself to do it. I felt, again, stuck. I was sometimes I felt depressed over it, right? Like because I just kept thinking about how do I change this, how do I change this, and I just couldn't do it. I'd have my mind made up to do well, and I'd fall off the beginning of the day. And so I just thought, this isn't gonna happen. Well, I am just so thankful too that in this process, I've just really, really stayed plugged into reading the Bible and being in prayer. And there's this verse that to this day I hold on to and I want to share it with you because we care so much about you. Um, it says in the Bible that he hasn't given us a spirit of timidity. So, what does that mean? Being afraid, right?

Being afraid, being too solid, reluctant, right? Reluctant, hesitant on something.

So he hasn't given us that spirit. Instead, what he's given us is one of power, of love, and of discipline, and a sound mind, and a sound mind, and you you just call on those things and you say, Lord, I'm not I'm not feeling a hundred. I can't do this, I don't feel like I'm strong enough. And that's when he steps in and can say, Allow me to be your strength. Thank you for that surrender to me. Now watch what I can do inside you. And I really just say, first and foremost, that's what it is.

Yeah, yeah. No, I agree a hundred percent. Uh we all desire some form of faith or some form of worship, like yeah, spirituality, worship, however you want to word that. And so when you begin to go on these journeys, sometimes you gotta reach a little bit deeper than just yourself. Uh, we love to depend on ourselves, and that's what we are supposed to do, but sometimes you need just a little bit of extra something, yeah. And so we're just putting out there what we lean on, yeah.

And if I may, um, and this might be a whole nother thing, but I just want to say this we live in a world in a society where we really are dependent on ourselves, and it feels like that's a good thing. Here's what I've learned that for me, focusing on what I can do, how I can do it, became my form of idolatry, and it really took the place of putting God first and saying that, hey, here I am, and thank you for how you've made me, and I'm in need of you. You know what I mean?

No, no, I I totally and a hundred percent agree with you on that. Um, I just don't want to get too deep into that part without understanding, like, there's a level of my child is walking towards the street and the car is going by. Should I jump out and stop? Well, let me pray about it first. There's a natural thing that you do to help yourself and help others, opposed to being so what I call heavenly-minded, you know, earthly good.

Ah, yes.

And that's what I so it's I'm not taking anything away from what you said, Jen, absolutely, because that's where the dig deep part comes in. But uh also we we still have to use that common sense.

Absolutely. I like that saying. Anyhow, um, yeah, I mean, what's intense, guys? It's the end of February. Is it it really yeah, pretty much the last week of February? Yeah, and so we're two months into the month, and I don't know everyone that listens, but I just hope that this year um has given you some good pieces, good spaces to be in, and some laughter, some love, some moments of joy. And if you're going through a challenge, um you'll get through it.

Faith, Discipline, And Balanced Wisdom

This is what we do, and I I know we are coming up on another year being on the elevator uh in a couple of months. So uh I'm gonna say, because I think this is gonna be year five, right?

I want to have a party, a bash, a celebration, and I want to share it with you guys listening. I want you to feel the enjoy emotion that we are going to bring forward on this podcast on this fifth year anniversary, because this is something that we just didn't know was gonna happen. We had no clue this is as far as we would go.
